The Ghettoblaster Ensemble is a mobile sound unit designed to perform sound art at all thinkable suitable places. It consists of 8 musicians and a conductor. Each of the 8 musicians has an instrument: "The Ghetto Blaster". The compositions are made especially for The Ghetto Blaster as an instrument in this unusual surround-sound constellation. This unique ensemble is a development of both the classical electroacoustic loudspeaker orchestra, and the idea of works for multi speaker setup. The Ghettoblaster Ensemble is a mobile street version of these landmark thoughts in sound – this is sound art on street level.

The Ghettoblaster Ensemble was formed in 2002 by members of Ssshhhhh... for The Cultural Night in Copenhagen 2002. The origin of the ensemble is to be found in Jørgen Teller's concept for an opening-event for the first Ssshhhhh... Sound bienale in 1999. On that occasion a multi speaker concert for 10 portable cd-players took place at the old Fluxus hangout, Nikolai Church in the center of Copenhagen.

Today, in some parts of the world the term ghetto blaster is concidered politically incorrect, and boom blaster, or boom box is used instead. In Sweden it's even known as a mountain blaster (bergsprängare). However, in Denmark it's always been known as a ghetto blaster, which is among the reasons we stick to this term!
